This print is part of the exhibition ‘Nudibranch’ by Coco Lom at The Book Club in Shoreditch, London. The exhibition is inspired by Nudibranchs, more commonly known as sea slugs. These luminous molluscs are famous for their psychedelic shapes and patterns, with each piece from the show celebrating a different member of the sea slug family.

    The Lettuce Lovers

    Scientific name - Elysia Crispata

    AKA Lettuce Sea Slugs

Lettuce Sea Slugs range from blue and green to purple and turquoise, and can be found at home in the tropical reefs of the southern Atlantic and Caribbean waters. They growup to 5cm long and are easily recognised by their ruffled bodies and fleshy folds that concertina over one another, like a frilly lettuce leaf.

Just like garden snails, sea slugs are hermaphroditic, which means they have both male and female reproductive organs. Sea slug playtime normally lasts for about 20 minutes in the wild and, once the eggs are laid, they take between 5 to 50 days to transform into beautiful lettuce larvae.
