Disney's 'Wonder-ful Playhouse' in west London
The Playhouse was created as part of Disney’s The Wonder of Play, a campaign drawing on Disney’s 100-year legacy of timeless stories, unforgettable characters and memorable products. The project encouraged adults and parents to play more together after new research* revealed the huge impact that play has on kids’ futures, their resilience, confidence and creativity.
Disney commissioned me as Artist and Creative Director to bring my playful ideas and joyful colours, shapes and patterns to the experience.
We transformed the house into a series of magical immersive playrooms, with the designs and activities inspired by different Disney worlds including Disney Princess, Pixar Cars, Star Wars™, MARVEL, plus Mickey and Friends. The ‘Wonder-ful Playhouse’ provided kids and their families with ideas and inspiration for playing at home together. For example, shining a hand torch through kitchen utensils, such as a colander, to project intergalactic shadow patterns that resembled shining stars from Star Wars, or building giant pillow forts inspired by Disney Princess characters using bed linen and colourful home-made decorations.
We collaborated with the Institute of Imagination, a pioneering charity in children’s education focusing on marginalised and disadvantaged young people. Together, we hosted a series of creative workshops with local children who shared ideas and inspiration for the space. It was an absolute joy to work with a group of brilliantly creative children, hearing their limitless ideas and turning them into
reality!
