East London Lines

In 2018, hundreds of thousands of people will travel on the east London Line. Sadly, the majority of them will have their eyes downcast, focused on books or phones. Swallowed up by their everyday habits, they will overlook some of east London's most exciting shifts of light and pattern.

Having lived in Hackney my whole life, I love to uncover the lines of the East London Line - the bold, geometric patterns and soothing colours which make this one of the most visually interesting railways in our city.

Departing from Haggerston, my local station, I captured a few of my favourite sites - from the rhythmic stripes of station steps to the repeated shadows created by platform seats. I hope this series might inspire you to break away from your phone on your next journey, and look up and down to discover some of the magnificent details around you.
