Pink Lady Apples - Basketball Court, Islington, London
I was commissioned by Pink Lady Apples to transform a public basketball court in Joseph Grimaldi Park Court, Islington, London. The restoration of the court was part of their ‘Feel the Wow’ campaign, creating feel-good moments. The project was in collaboration with Project in the Paint, a not-for-profit organisation which facilitates the refurbishment of basketball courts across the UK.
My design was inspired by microscopic views of apples - from apple leaves to dried-out apple pollen - which revealed the most beautiful shapes and patterns. I also wanted to echo the movement and shifts of energy that basketball players have mid-flow during a game.
Community involvement was central to the project, so we invited young players from local basketball teams to help paint sections of the floor mural. To celebrate the launch, we also hosted community basketball sessions on the court, led by England basketball champion Lamar Roberts.
When we’re children, our world is full of colour, but sadly as we get older, we often lose this playful and colourful side to life. Colour has the power to affect our mind, body and happiness and can trigger different moods and emotions. It was fantastic to see the court inspiring people of all ages and abilities, locally and beyond, to move, play and take part in community sport.
